SC summons provincial IGs over illegal occupation of official residences
The Supreme Court on Wednesday summoned inspectors general (IGs) of all four provinces on July 6 (Friday) in a case pertaining to illegal occupation of official residences.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar while hearing a case regarding illegally occupation of official residences by police officials also summoned a record of ongoing cases in lower courts and stay orders issued on the residences in question.

During the hearing, the additional attorney general claimed that the provincial IGs are not cooperating.

“In Islamabad alone, 200 official residences have been illegally occupied by police officials,” the additional attorney general said.

“We apprised the IG Islamabad but he is not cooperating with us,” he lamented adding that the situation is similar in Karachi.

To this, the chief justice questioned as to why the IGs are not cooperating.

Justice Nisar then said, “Ask the IGs to appear in court whether via helicopter or plane.”

However, the additional attorney general said it was not possible for the IGs to appear immediately and asked for the hearing of the case to be adjourned till Friday.

Adjourning the hearing of the case till July 6, Justice Nisar ordered that all four IGs appear for the hearing and files be presented of illegally occupied residences on which stay orders were given.

Pakistan can’t progress if Karachi isn’t managed well: Imran Khan

Imran Khan
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, who is in Karachi on a two-day visit as part of his election drive, termed the metropolis’ development as critical to Pakistan’s progress.

Addressing a gathering of business community on Wednesday, the PTI chief outlined his party’s plans for the city’s development.

“Pakistan cannot progress if its biggest city Karachi isn’t managed well,” said Imran, as he lamented the lack of basic facilities in the megapolis.

The PTI leader said his party, if voted into power, would introduce an empowered local government system in Karachi and take care of the city’s growing water needs by building desalination plants and power projects.

“Pakistan is lagging behind in the world, even in the subcontinent which is [one of the poorest] regions,” he said.

“The nation is in debt like it has never been before.. the rupee is sliding [against the dollar]. People want change. People of Sindh are ready for change.”

Imran is scheduled to tour different areas of the metropolis today as part of his ongoing campaign for the upcoming general election.

He is also set to unveil PTI’s first-ever national housing scheme for the public.

Those responsible for Lahore sinkhole will be punished: Interim transport minister
An inquiry committee has been set up to probe the appearance of a sinkhole in Lahore, the caretaker transport minister for Punjab said, following the more than 10-hour-long torrential rainfall that flooded the city on Tuesday.

The heaviest rains in 38 years turned roads into virtual rivers in Lahore, stranding motorists and leaving at least eight people dead.

The thundershower created a sinkhole — 20ft deep and 200ft wide — on the Mall Road, right in front of the General Post Office, with another one measuring 50ft appearing at some distance from the first.

According to the minister, the committee has been advised to submit its findings on the GPO Chowk sinkhole in a report within the next 48 hours.

Those responsible for the sinkhole will be punished, the minister added.

Lahore recorded 214 millimeters (8.4 inches) of rain in the 24 hours up to 8am on Tuesday, the heaviest in 38 years, the country's chief meteorologist Muhammad Riaz said.

He said a monsoon system would bring continued heavy rains for the next 24 to 48 hours.

PTI's Yar Muhammd Rind, PPP's Yasmin Shah disqualified from contesting general election
The Balochistan High Court on Tuesday disqualified Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) provincial president Yar Muhammad Rind from contesting the 2018 General Election.

A two-member bench of the BHC declared the PTI Balochistan president ineligible to contest the election scheduled for July 25.

Rind had moved the BHC after an Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) appellate tribunal upheld a retiring officer’s decision to disqualify him on the grounds that he possessed a fake degree and had murder cases against him.

During the hearing, the BHC declared that the decision by the RO and appellate tribunal would stand and rejected his plea seeking permission to contest election from PB-17 and NA-260 Kachi/Jhal Magsi.

Earlier, the bench had reserved its decision on Rind’s plea.

Following BHC’s verdict, the PTI Balochistan president announced that he will challenge the decision in the Supreme Court.

Further, BHC also disqualified former provincial minister Mir Faiq Ali Jamali from contesting the election.

A day earlier, the BHC disqualified Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) provincial leader Ali Madad Jattak from contesting the elections.

In 2013, Jattak was sentenced to a two-year prison term and fined Rs10,000 in a fake degree case.

Chaos in Merkel's coalition after Seehofer dangles resignation

Chaos in Merkel's coalition after Seehofer dangles resignation

Chaos in Merkel's coalition after Seehofer dangles resignation
German Chancellor Angela Merkel will make a last-ditch effort today to end a migration row with her conservative allies by holding more talks with her interior minister, whose offer to resign cast doubt over whether her fragile government can survive.

Horst Seehofer offered to quit his ministerial post and the chairmanship of the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) at a marathon party meeting on Sunday to discuss whether immigration proposals Merkel brought back from Brussels last week were acceptable.

But he was then persuaded by party colleagues to have one more meeting with Merkel on Monday to try to resolve the long-standing row and said he would make his final decision within three days.

Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) relies on the CSU to maintain power through a coalition, also including the Social Democrats (SPD), formed three months ago after an election in September.

Germany’s political crisis is the latest sign of a growing divide across the EU between those who want to maintain open borders and those who want to restrict the number of migrants entering the bloc.

The ructions in Berlin were putting pressure on the euro early on Monday while Germany’s top share index opened more than one per cent lower.

Officials from the Bavaria-based CSU accused Merkel of rejecting several compromise proposals made by Seehofer to heal the rift with her own CDU.

Seehofer, who has demanded that Merkel toughen her open-doors refugee policy, told colleagues on Sunday that in spite of the measures agreed with EU leaders, he saw no alternative to turning some migrants back at the border. Merkel rejects this.

In an extremely fluid situation, Merkel and Seehofer are due to meet later in the day and before that, a joint session of the parliamentary groups of the CSU and CDU is due to take place, although there was some doubt if it would go ahead.

Crucially for Merkel, CDU lawmakers are backing her — so far.

Hans-Peter Friedrich, a member of the CSU leadership, said that Merkel’s rejections of compromises submitted by Seehofer suggested she was happy to see him go.

“Now it depends on whether Horst Seehofer draws his own conclusions,” Friedrich told Deutschlandfunk public broadcaster. “Her attitude feeds the suspicion that she would happily accept Horst Seehofer’s resignation.”

CSU leaders are divided over how to face down a challenge from the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) in October’s regional election.

Seehofer told party colleagues at an executive committee meeting on Sunday that discussions with Merkel had been fruitless, according to a party source.

One possibility is for the 70-year old CDU and CSU alliance to split which would rob Merkel of her parliamentary majority. This could see to her trying to lead a minority government, or possibly new elections.

Pakistan committed to ending regional conflict: Ambassador Ali Jahangir

Pakistan committed to ending regional conflict: Ambassador Ali Jahangir

Pakistan committed to ending regional conflict: Ambassador Ali Jahangir
Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States Ali Jahangir Siddiqui has said peace in Afghanistan is his top policy priority and his country remains committed to ending regional conflict.

In an interview to Bloomberg TV on Monday, Siddiqui said Pakistan is working on a second portion of a fence at its border with its war-ravaged neighbour Afghanistan. The fence is a clear sign of Pakistan’s interest in ending the regional conflict and will help Pakistan and Afghanistan equally in doing so, Siddiqui said.

US President Donald Trump has in the past accused Pakistan of harbouring “agents of chaos” and providing safe havens to militant groups waging an insurgency against the US-backed government in Kabul.

US Army Lieutenant General Austin Miller, Trump’s nominee to head the US-led coalition in Afghanistan, said in a statement to a Senate panel last month that Pakistan has made “many sacrifices” and “its security forces have fought bravely,” but “we have not yet seen these counter-terrorism efforts against anti-Pakistan militants translate into definitive actions against Afghan Taliban or Haqqani leaders residing in Pakistan.”

“Until we complete this fence, it’s unreasonable to say we aren’t doing anything,” Siddiqui said.

On Pakistan’s economic imbalance, Siddiqui, a former banker and private equity executive and a graduate of Cornell University, said the dwindling foreign reserves and widening current account and trade deficits require a “structural change.”

The envoy said a “major energy shortage” has hobbled Pakistan’s economy, including textiles that are its prime export, and suggested importing more US natural gas as a key to diversifying his nation’s energy supply while expanding trade relations.

“Pakistan is on its way to becoming one of the world’s largest gas importers, and the US is well on its way to becoming the world’s largest LNG exporter,” Siddiqui said. “There is a lot of growth in our trade relation that could occur."

Trade between the US and Pakistan has stalled at about $5.5 billion in goods a year over the past decade. The top US exports to Pakistan are machinery and aircraft, while it imports include mainly textiles and leather products.

Bilawal served show-cause notice for violating code of conduct during Lyari visit
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was served a show-cause notice on Tuesday for violating the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) code of conduct during his Lyari visit.

The show-cause notice issued by deputy commissioner south stated that the PPP chairman had not informed district or police administration ahead of his rally in Lyari on July 1.

As per the notice, the ECP’s code of conduct makes it necessary for politicians to inform concerned authorities regarding their rallies three days in advance.

Bilawal has been asked to clarify his position by July 5 (Thursday). Action would be taken as per law upon failure to submit a reply by the given date, the notice warned.

On Sunday, a group of protesters pelted Bilawal’s motorcade with stones in Lyari.

The residents of Bihar Colony stopped Bilawal’s rally from travelling to Lyari and chanted slogans against him. Some disgruntled protesters also resorted to vandalism and broke the windows of a car, which was a part of PPP chief’s caravan.

Bilawal’s motorcade was halted as his car started to heat up and was later forced to change the route of his electoral rally. A first information report (FIR) was filed Sunday night against 400-450 unidentified persons, including 13 locals.

SSP City Samiullah Soomro on Monday said the location of the suspects had been traced by using their mobile numbers and that raids were under way to arrest them.

Nawaz’s defence lawyer Khawaja Haris will continue cross-examining NAB’s star witness and Panamagate Joint Investigation Team head Wajid Zia in today’s hearing.

The court during June 29 hearing of Avenfield properties reference had summoned Zia today for the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference.

The accountability court will resume hearing the Avenfield case at 2pm today, where Maryam Nawaz’s counsel will continue his concluding arguments.

The cases

Nawaz and his family are facing three corruption cases in the Accountability Court-I after the NAB filed references against them in light of the Supreme Court's verdict in the Panama Papers case.

The corruption references, filed against the Sharifs, pertain to the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment, offshore companies including Flagship Investment Ltd, and Avenfield properties of London.

The two brothers, based abroad, have been absconding since the proceedings began last year and were declared proclaimed offenders by the court.

Stunned silence in Tokyo as Japan World Cup dream ends

Stunned silence in Tokyo as Japan World Cup dream ends

Stunned silence in Tokyo as Japan World Cup dream ends
As dawn broke in Tokyo, Japan fans had dared to believe their team was about to make World Cup history. But a few short minutes later, the dream was over.

At a bar in a Tokyo business district, the air went out of the room as Belgium found the net in extra time, scoring a third goal to seal Japan's fate.

Just a short while earlier, whoops of joy had filled the pub in Tokyo's Shinagawa district as the Blue Samurai scored a second goal, defying expectations to go 2-0 up over star-studded Belgium.

But when the final whistle went with Belgium winning 3-2 to end Japan's latest shot at World Cup history, fans sat in virtual silence, staring in disbelief at the screen.

"I'm so frustrated," 32-year-old Ryota Iwakiri said bitterly, trying to comprehend the sudden collapse, as others around him tried to hold back tears.

"The game was like a roller-coaster. They let us dream of a victory at one point. They really had good momentum," said Yuki Kakishita, an employee at a real estate agency.

Fans at the bar, some dressed in their team's blue strip and sporting Japanese flags painted on their cheeks, had exploded with joy when Takashi Inui scored the team's second goal.

"We were so excited when Japan took the lead. But Belgium were so tough," said Shimon Otomo, a businessman still wearing his suit and tie.

Many fans watching the game at a public screening could be seen with their head in their hands as Japan's campaign ended.

The disappointment was crushing despite the low expectations that accompanied the team into the tournament.

After several poor showings leading up to the World Cup, and an 11th hour decision by bosses to sack coach Vahid Halilhodzic, many feared Japan would not even make it out of its group.

And new coach Akira Nishino was bitterly criticised for ordering the team to run down the clock in their final group stage match, knowing a 1-0 loss to Poland would be enough to allow them to advance.

For some fans though, there was consolation to be had in the fact that the team made it so far, and got so close to an unprecedented quarter-final spot.

"We lost it, but they left everything on the pitch," conceded 23-year-old Sawa Okada.

"Japan showed people that they are competitive on the world stage," added Iwakiri.

"Japan nearly slayed the giant."

World Cup fever has gripped Japan despite a time difference that meant Monday's match aired from 3:00am local time on Tuesday morning in Tokyo.

As the result sank in, people began to drift out of the bar, heading into the subway where early-bird commuters were already making their way in to the office.

"It was worth staying up late to watch it," said Otomo, polishing off a cocktail and straightening out his suit.

"I'll have to go straight to the office now though, time to work hard again."
